Today is a special day. I know it’s special because I heard my owner, Lily, whispering to her friend, “Today’s his birthday! I hope it’s a good day for him.” It made me happy, hearing her care so much. So here I am, wagging my tail, hoping today will be full of good things.
I know I look a bit different from other dogs. My back legs don’t work like they used to, and I’ve got this neat little wheelchair that lets me scoot around. It took a bit to get used to, but now I race down the hallway with it, and Lily cheers me on every time. At first, I was a bit sad about not being able to run like before, but Lily helped me realize that there are so many things I can still do. I may have wheels instead of paws on the back, but my heart’s still the same. I still feel the joy of every sunny day and the thrill of every adventure.
This morning, Lily took me outside, and the air felt perfect. The sun was shining just right, and the grass was still dewy and cool under my front paws. I rolled myself forward, feeling the wind ruffle my fur. Birds were chirping, and I barked at a squirrel just to let it know I was still around. Even though I can’t chase after it like before, it felt nice to see it scurry up a tree.
Lily decided that today, we’d go to my favorite park. I love the park because there are always other dogs there, and even if I can’t join them in running, they still come up to sniff and say hello. They never seem to mind my wheels; to them, I’m just another friend, and that makes me feel so happy. There’s a big grassy hill in the park, and I love to zoom down it with Lily running behind me, laughing. It feels like flying!
While we were at the park, a few people came up to us and petted me. They said things like, “What a strong little guy you are,” and “You’re such a brave dog.” I don’t feel especially brave, but Lily tells me I am, and I believe her. I was born with a spirit that wants to love every part of life, no matter what.
After the park, Lily took me to my favorite store. It’s a small pet shop with shelves full of treats and toys, and the owner always gives me a little cookie whenever we come by. Today, she handed me two cookies, smiling and patting me gently. “Happy birthday, little guy,” she said. I took the cookies gratefully and felt a warm glow in my chest. Birthdays really are something special, I thought.
When we got home, I was a bit tired, so I lay on my bed, feeling peaceful and happy. Lily came over and put a soft blanket around me. She held my head gently in her hands and looked into my eyes. “You’re such a good boy,” she said softly. “You’ve brought so much happiness into my life.” I looked at her, my tail thumping softly against the floor. I wanted her to know that she has brought joy into my life, too—that every day with her is full of love and laughter, no matter how my legs feel.
Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, Lily brought out something small and bright. It was a little cake! She placed it in front of me, singing softly, “Happy birthday to you…” I couldn’t help but bark a little with excitement. Lily laughed, clapping her hands, and let me have a taste. The cake was sweet and soft, and I savored every bite, feeling like the happiest dog in the world.
As the day came to a close, I lay next to Lily, resting my head on her lap. She stroked my fur, whispering sweet words, and I felt a peacefulness settle in my heart. Today had been the best birthday I could have asked for, filled with the things I loved and the people who loved me back. Even though I can’t run like I used to, I know that life still holds so much joy, so much beauty, and I am ready to greet every new day with a wagging tail and a hopeful heart.
Today is my birthday, and I got my wish: a day filled with love, happiness, and the simple, beautiful things that make life so special. Here’s to more days like today—because with Lily by my side, I know that every day can feel a little bit like a celebration.
