I haven’t known what a birthday is for the past five years

Aspen was once a beloved family dog, his days filled with love, warmth, and joy. But at just five years old, Aspen’s life changed forever. His family moved away and left him behind, and no one ever came back for him. Since that fateful day, Aspen’s world has been defined by the walls of the shelter he’s come to know as home. Year after year, as dogs around him found their forever homes, Aspen watched quietly, his brown eyes filled with longing, waiting for someone to notice him.

Today, Aspen turns ten. A whole five years have passed since he last felt the embrace of a family or heard a voice call his name with affection. The shelter volunteers know it’s his birthday, and they try their best to make it special for him. They bring him a small cake made just for dogs, topped with a candle. One by one, they visit his kennel, patting his head and singing a quiet birthday song, whispering wishes for happiness and hope that this will be the last birthday Aspen spends alone.

Aspen sits quietly in his kennel, watching the flickering candlelight, wondering if this will be the year his dream finally comes true. Deep down, he feels the weight of each year, each birthday marking another cycle of hope, followed by disappointment. He watches as people pass by his kennel, their eyes sliding over him to the younger dogs, the puppies with bright eyes and boundless energy. But Aspen has so much love to give. Despite his age, despite the gray hairs now showing on his muzzle, Aspen’s heart is still as warm and ready to love as it was when he was a puppy.

Today, the volunteers spend extra time with him, taking him to the shelter’s small garden, where he can feel the soft grass under his paws. For a few moments, Aspen runs, his tail wagging, his eyes bright with the joy of simple freedom. For these few minutes, Aspen isn’t a lonely shelter dog—he’s just Aspen, full of life, dreaming of a family to call his own.

As the day ends and Aspen returns to his kennel, he curls up on his blanket, his heart holding on to hope. Somewhere out there, Aspen believes, there must be a family who will see past his age and his history. He knows he might have fewer days ahead than he has behind, but he still dreams of those days being filled with love, warmth, and a place to call home. This is Aspen’s birthday wish, whispered into the quiet of the night, a wish for a forever family who will see the gentle, loyal heart of an old dog just waiting to be loved.

And so, Aspen waits, holding onto the hope that perhaps, next year, his birthday will be spent in the arms of a family who will never leave him behind.
