After a year of waiting, wheelchair-bound pup still seeks a forever home

Sanctuary’s Journey: From Abandoned Pup to Beloved Companion

In the cold of a February night in 2022, three six-week-old Pit Bull puppies were found discarded in a cardboard box in an alley in St. Louis. This grim discovery marked the beginning of a challenging journey for these tiny lives. The puppies, later named Sanctuary and his two brothers, were in dire condition—injured, malnourished, and showing concerning neurological symptoms. They were quickly rescued by the compassionate team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, who provided immediate care for their injuries and malnutrition.

After being rescued, the puppies were taken to the Stray Rescue of St. Louis’ veterinary clinic, where they spent several weeks under careful observation and treatment. Their initial wounds were tended to, and they were provided with the nourishment they desperately needed. Once stabilized, they were placed in foster homes where they began their recovery journey. While Sanctuary’s brothers found their forever homes, Sanctuary himself faced additional challenges due to a neurological condition that would require special care.

The Challenge of Cerebellar Hypoplasia

Sanctuary’s journey is marked by his struggle with cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological condition where the cerebellum—the brain part responsible for motor functions—is either underdeveloped or smaller than usual. This condition significantly affects his ability to move, balance, and coordinate. As a result, Sanctuary has difficulty walking and maintaining proper posture.

Despite these challenges, Sanctuary’s life took a positive turn thanks to the support from Walkin’ Pets. They provided him with a custom wheelchair that has dramatically improved his mobility and independence. This adaptive equipment allows Sanctuary to navigate his surroundings, engage in physical activities, and maintain a level of autonomy that would otherwise be difficult for him.

A New Lease on Life

Sanctuary’s foster mom, Clare, shares that the wheelchair has been transformative for Sanctuary’s quality of life. “His wheelchair has made the biggest difference in his life,” Clare says. “It has helped him physically, mentally, and emotionally. He can run, walk, eat, drink, and go to the bathroom on his own.” The wheelchair has not only given Sanctuary the ability to move around but has also enhanced his overall well-being.

Despite his condition, Sanctuary leads a vibrant and joyful life. He is described as incredibly friendly, patient, and well-behaved. His enthusiasm for playtime, especially with his favorite toy lamb chop, and his love for cuddling on the couch after a day of activities, highlight his delightful personality. Sanctuary’s intelligence and playful nature make him a cherished companion for those who understand his special needs.
