A Kansas shelter dog, adopted under a year ago, found with severe burns, is slowly recovering

Less than a year ago, a young, black pit bull mix with an undeniably sweet disposition found a loving home through the Kansas Humane Society. Named J-Dog, this gentle soul seemed to have it all. However, fate took a cruel turn. Suddenly, J-Dog was brought to the Wichita Animal Shelter with horrific burns covering his back. The injuries were severe and appeared to be at least three days old, suggesting the dog had endured unimaginable pain. The situation was dire; many believed J-Dog wouldn’t survive.

A fighting spirit

Against all odds, J-Dog, now renamed Dwight, showed remarkable resilience. Despite the life-threatening injuries, he displayed an unwavering will to live. His determination to overcome adversity was inspiring. The Wichita Animal Shelter, recognizing the gravity of the situation, reached out for help.

A rescue’s lifeline

Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary, a rescue organization based in Spring Hill, stepped up to the challenge. They took Dwight into their care and initiated an intensive recovery plan. Daily hydrotherapy sessions, laser treatments, and round-the-clock care became Dwight’s new normal. Julie McNamara, the medical coordinator at the rescue, described the arduous process: constant bandage changes, IV fluids, pain medication, and, most importantly, love. Dwight’s raw wounds required protective clothing, and the overall care was intensive.
