A brave dog rescued from a trash bin has found a forever home filled with love

Chi Chi, a remarkable golden retriever, nearly lost her life and almost all of her legs. But her story didn’t end there. In fact, her extraordinary journey was just beginning. Chi Chi went on to overcome severe injuries, becoming a therapy dog and was honored by the American Humane as the 2018 American Hero Dog. However, before we celebrate her incredible achievements, it’s crucial to understand the heartbreaking circumstances of her early life.

In 2016, Chi Chi faced a horrific start to life. She was abandoned to die in a trash bin in South Korea, left in a garbage bag with her two legs bound tightly with steel wire, which was causing severe damage to her skin. This precious dog was discovered in this state of fear and agony, and fortunately, Animal Rescue, Media & Education (ARME) received a tip about a potential dog meat farm, where Chi Chi was found. The Nabiya Irion Hope Project, a local animal welfare group in Korea, was instrumental in rescuing her.

Once Chi Chi was rescued, she was taken to the hospital for treatment. The extent of her injuries was so severe that all four of her legs had to be amputated just above her paws. The road ahead would be long and painful, but Chi Chi’s story was far from over.

Her recovery was an incredibly challenging process, but with perseverance, she was fitted with four custom prosthetic legs. It was a new chapter for Chi Chi, who had to learn to walk again, but with her strength and resilience, she surprised everyone by moving faster than anyone expected. After a lengthy rehabilitation period, Chi Chi found her forever home with Elizabeth Howell in Arizona. Howell had seen Chi Chi’s rescue video and immediately knew she wanted to adopt this brave dog.

Upon her arrival in Arizona, Chi Chi needed further adjustments to her prosthetics. The process was difficult because her legs had been amputated at varying lengths. However, through a combination of patience and trial, Chi Chi was able to walk on her prosthetic legs, and her transformation was nothing short of miraculous.

Fully recovered, Chi Chi went on to become a therapy dog. She visited assisted living facilities, veterans, young people, and even other amputees. Her visits had a profound impact, spreading joy and hope wherever she went. Chi Chi became a living symbol of persistence, love, and compassion.

Unfortunately, in March 2018, Chi Chi was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her nasal cavity, a heartbreaking blow for the courageous dog. Despite undergoing treatment, Chi Chi passed away in February 2019, leaving behind an indelible legacy.

Chi Chi’s legacy will forever be remembered. Her story is one of survival, resilience, and an unwavering spirit. She was more than just a dog; she was an inspiration to everyone who crossed her path. Her bravery continues to touch hearts, and her journey remains a testament to the power of compassion and the strength that animals possess.
