A Journey of Adaptation and Resilience

Cola’s story is one of remarkable resilience and adaptability. Born with the challenge of losing her two back legs early in life, Cola had to learn how to navigate the world using only her two front paws. Despite this significant physical challenge, Cola has proven to be an extraordinary example of strength and perseverance. Rachel, cofounder of Twenty Paws Rescue, describes Cola as a dog with “no limitations.” She can run around, handle stairs, and even frolic in the snow, where she delights in catching snowflakes with her nose. Cola’s ability to embrace life with such enthusiasm despite her physical differences underscores her indomitable spirit and the remarkable ways animals can adapt to their circumstances.

From India to New York: Cola’s Long Road to Rescue

Cola’s journey to her current situation in New York City has been long and arduous. Initially rescued by Kanan Animal Welfare in India in 2020, Cola spent several years at a shelter there, waiting for adoption. The prospects for finding a loving home in India were bleak, leading to her transfer to Twenty Paws Rescue in the U.S. in March 2023. Rachel from Twenty Paws explains the transition as a significant adjustment for Cola, who arrived from a very different environment. “Cola was very shy and fearful when she first arrived,” Rachel recounts. Over time, with the support of her foster home, Cola began to emerge from her shell, revealing her playful and affectionate nature. Despite the extensive care and attention she has received, Cola has yet to find her forever home, which is a testament to the challenge of finding a perfect match for a dog with such a unique history.

Challenges and Triumphs in Mobility

Cola’s physical adaptations, while impressive, have not been without their challenges. The amputation of her hind legs as a puppy led to some discomfort and chronic pain as she grew. Twenty Paws Rescue has been dedicated to addressing these issues, working with high-level programs to manage her pain and tightness. Attempts to fit Cola with a mobility device, such as a pet wheelchair, were met with difficulty due to unique fusions in her back that made the chair uncomfortable for her. Undeterred, the rescue team is now collaborating with 3DPets and Joey’s Paws to create a custom 3D-printed wheelchair that is tailored to Cola’s specific needs. In the meantime, Cola continues to get around on her own, using joint and muscle supplements and receiving regular laser treatment sessions to manage her discomfort.
