Officer Michael Pascale, a kind-hearted NYPD officer, encountered a sight that would forever change his life. During a routine patrol in a public park, a small, shivering black puppy huddled amongst discarded needles and broken beer bottles caught his eye. The puppy, later named Joey, was chained to a fence, clearly abandoned and scared.
“He’s just looking up at me with these ‘Help Me’ eyes,” Pascale recounted to The Dodo. Driven by compassion, Officer Pascale knew exactly what he had to do: get Joey out of that deplorable situation.
Safe and dry, but longing for more
Taking Joey to the Animal Care Centers of NYC shelter in Brooklyn, Pascale felt a growing connection with the grateful pup as he dried him off with a towel. “I don’t see an animal,” Pascale declared with conviction, “I see a soul. And I don’t avoid that either.” He sent a picture of Joey to his wife via text, and her response was immediate – bring him home. Eager to provide Joey with a loving home, the couple faced a small hurdle.
A 72-hour wait that felt like a lifetime
The shelter informed Officer Pascale that a mandatory 72-hour stray hold was in place. This period allows heartbroken owners a chance to reclaim their lost pets. While Joey appeared undeniably abandoned, the possibility of a missing owner lingered. Despite the tearful goodbye, Pascale vowed to return each day during the hold. These visits fostered a deeper bond between them.
Finally, after the agonizing wait, the stray hold lifted, and Joey could officially become part of the Pascale family. Paperwork finalized, a joyful Joey showered Officer Pascale with kisses as a promise of their new life together. Pascale, his heart full, vowed to protect Joey and ensure he never faced neglect or abuse again.
A new life, full of love (and the occasional mischief)
The once-frightened stray has blossomed into a strong, loving companion. Joey enjoys exploring New York City with his “dad” and cuddling with his “mom” on the couch. Pascale jokingly describes him as a “mama’s boy.” While not perfect – Joey enjoys a good trash-digging session and dislikes rainy walks – he is generally content, as evidenced by his aptly named Instagram account, @JoeyGoodDoggo. Joey’s story is a testament to the power of human compassion and the unwavering loyalty of dogs. He may occasionally chew on shoes or chase squirrels, but that’s just puppy nature. Ultimately, all he wants is what any dog truly desires – a loving home and a family to call his own.
