A life change at 21

Bully’s life wasn’t always filled with the playful camaraderie of fellow senior pups. When his previous owner, likely due to age-related limitations, could no longer care for him, Bully found himself at the crossroads of his life at the ripe old age of 21. This, for most dogs, would be a daunting transition. Entering a new environment often proves stressful, even for young, energetic pups. But Bully, a “super senior” in dog years, having far surpassed the average Chihuahua lifespan, took it all in stride.

The Mr. Mo project: A sanctuary for senior souls

The Mr. Mo Project, founded by Chris Hughes and his wife Mariesa, became Bully’s new haven. Inspired by their own experience caring for Moses, a senior dog surrendered for adoption due to his age, the couple dedicated their lives to providing a loving sanctuary for overlooked senior pups. Their home, transformed with over $55,000, became a haven for these often-discarded animals, offering them a safe and comfortable space to spend their golden years.

A feisty spirit endures

Despite the initial challenges of a new environment, Bully thrived. Chris describes him as a multifaceted character – feisty, mischievous, sweet, independent, gentle, and calm, all with a signature “old man bark.” Even at his advanced age, his playful spirit shines through as he attempts to boss around his fellow Chihuahuas, proving that age is just a number.

A low-key celebration for a remarkable birthday

Bully’s 23rd birthday, a milestone few dogs ever reach, called for a celebration. However, keeping in mind his age and preferences, the festivities were tailored to his comfort. Recognizing his lack of teeth, Chris explains, “we got a soft biscuit and crushed it up for him to enjoy.” Sleep, a cherished activity for senior dogs, became the ultimate birthday gift.

Celebrating life’s victories, big and small

Chris and Mariesa’s dedication extends far beyond providing a comfortable space. They understand the emotional needs of senior dogs. Many of these pups, overlooked due to their age and physical limitations, still possess a zest for life. The Mr. Mo Project celebrates every victory, big or small – birthdays, adoptions, even the completion of a dog’s chemotherapy treatment. They’ve even been known to celebrate a “Christmas in July” for pups who might not make it to the actual holiday.

Bully’s 23rd birthday stands as a testament to this philosophy. It’s a celebration of life, resilience, and the unwavering love that transcends age. Bully’s story serves as an inspiration, reminding us that senior dogs deserve a chance at happiness and that even in their golden years, they can bring immense joy to our lives.
