Shelter dog heartbroken as her best friend was adopted but she wasn’t

Stillwater Animal Welfare (SAW) is no stranger to rescuing lost and abandoned animals. But last month’s intake brought a unique pair – two dogs, later named Bonnie and Clyde, who displayed an unwavering loyalty that captured the hearts of the shelter staff.

An unbreakable bond

These two canine companions weren’t your average strays. Their journey together, however long it may have been, had forged an undeniable bond. SAW staff member Ashlie Jerkes observed, “They travelled who knows how far, but they always stayed together.” This unwavering loyalty continued even in the safe haven of the shelter. “They served their stray hold in the same kennel together,” Jerkes shared, “where they seemed pretty close.”

Despite facing health challenges like heartworm, Bonnie and Clyde found solace in each other’s company. They spent their initial days at SAW recuperating and finding comfort in their shared space. Even during playtime, their connection was evident – “When we gave them outside time, they would just run together,” Jerkes explained.

A temporary heartbreak

Unfortunately, their inseparable journey took a heartbreaking turn. While enjoying his time at the shelter, Clyde found his perfect match – a loving family ready to welcome him home. But for Bonnie, happiness felt incomplete. The once lively pup became despondent, missing her “brother” terribly.

SAW staff member’s hearts ached for Bonnie. To help her find her own happily ever after, they shared a photo of a dejected Bonnie on the shelter’s social media page. The caption read, “Bonnie is all alone since her bother got adopted, and she definitely misses having a sibling to cuddle with.”

A happy ending for Bonnie

The power of social media proved to be a blessing in disguise. The heartfelt plea for Bonnie resonated with someone special. “That was posted on Friday, and someone came in first thing Monday to adopt her,” Jerkes shared, her voice filled with relief.

Bonnie’s new family, with a furry blue heeler-mix waiting at home as a “big sis,” welcomed her with open arms. “She’s already settling in!” Brayden Routh, Bonnie’s new mom, wrote on the shelter’s Facebook page. “She’s going to have the best life, full of adventures with her new family.”
